Tiger Math vs Khan Academy Kids: Choose by Age and Learning Goal

Compare Tiger Math with Khan Academy Kids for early learning and school-age math practice, including free access, age ranges and offline limitations.

For a preschooler who needs a mix of early reading and math, Khan Academy Kids is the clearer starting point. For a child aged 6–12 whose goal is focused math practice, Tiger Math is worth considering. At ages 6–8, their audiences overlap, so the activity your child needs matters more than their birthday alone.

This guide is published by Tiger Math and compares official documentation checked on 2 October 2026. It is not an independent review or a hands-on comparison of current app versions. “Khan Academy Kids” here means the early-learning app, rather than the separate, broader Khan Academy service.

When to choose Khan Academy Kids

Choose Khan Academy Kids when your priority is a broad early-learning resource and you want the family app's activities without a subscription. A younger child may need letter sounds, stories and counting in the same routine. That is a different task from practising a multiplication table.

Its stated audience includes children aged 2–8 and families supporting PreK–2nd grade. The separate school and district offering should not be confused with the free family mobile app. Khan Academy explains those audiences and access models.

You do not need to move a child away from an activity that still fits their needs simply because they are approaching the top of an advertised age range. Look at the difficulty of the actual work and what they are learning at school.

When to consider Tiger Math

Tiger Math may fit an older child who wants to practise a particular math topic. Its activities include arithmetic, times tables, fractions and clocks, and its listing describes hints, explanations and parent reports. These are developer-reported features, not evidence that it produces better learning outcomes than Khan Academy Kids. Read the current product description.

If your child is practising multiplication, start with one table they are learning in class. For example, ask them to show 4 × 6 as four groups of six, then explain how knowing 4 × 5 helps. Our times tables pages offer a starting point. The suggestion is a way to connect an app activity to an explanation, not a research-tested Tiger Math programme.

Can Khan Academy Kids work offline?

Yes, but with an important limit. Its support guide identifies Kodi's Suitcase and Create as available without Wi-Fi. Initial account creation requires Wi-Fi. Prepare those activities before a journey instead of assuming every lesson will be available. See Khan Academy Kids' offline instructions.

For either app, run a practical check: open the activity you plan to use, turn on airplane mode, close and reopen the app, and check that the activity remains accessible. For a screen-free backup, see our offline math games guide.

What learning research can tell parents

Math games can support learning, but that does not make all apps equally suitable. A meta-analysis of 24 studies found a small average benefit for mathematics video games relative to traditional instruction, alongside substantial variation. It is not evidence that Tiger Math outperforms Khan Academy Kids, or that either app alone replaces teaching.

For this decision, ask whether an activity matches the child's current skill and whether they can explain what they did. If they guess repeatedly, sit together and work through an example using objects or paper before trying again.
