Offline Math Games for Kids: Six Games and Apps for the Journey

Six offline math games with clear rules, worked examples and easier options, plus what to check before taking a math app on a flight or road trip.

The bags are packed. The tablet is charged. Then, somewhere between the departure gate and your seat, the game asks for an internet connection.

A little preparation avoids that particular disappointment. For kids who enjoy numbers, a spoken guessing game, a deck of cards or an app that actually opens offline can fill a quiet stretch of the journey. Nobody needs to turn the whole holiday into homework.

The suggested ages are starting points. Choose by what your child can already do, and use spoken games when loose pieces would be awkward. On a road trip, a passenger can lead; the driver should concentrate on driving.

1. Mystery Number: the no-equipment option

Start here: ages 6–8; comparing and ordering numbers.

Choose a whole number from 0 to 20. Your child gets five yes-or-no questions before guessing. They might ask, “Is it greater than 10?” or “Is it even?” Answer only the question they asked, then let them think.

If your number is 14, “greater than 10” removes 0–10. “Less than 16” leaves 11–15. “Even” leaves 12 and 14. You have something interesting to discuss: which question would separate those last two?

Make it easier: use 0–10 and allow unlimited questions. Make it harder: use 1–100 and questions about multiples. Swap roles after each number so your child gets to set the puzzle too.

2. Make Ten: a small game for a tray table

Start here: ages 6–8; addition within 10.

  1. Remove the jokers, picture cards and 10s from a deck. Aces count as 1.
  2. Lay out six cards face up. Take turns finding two whose values add to 10.
  3. Say the addition aloud, keep the pair, and replace it with two cards from the deck.
  4. If nobody can find a pair, clear the six cards into a discard pile and deal up to six more. When the deck is empty, use up any remaining pairs and count them.

A 7 needs a 3. A 5 needs another 5. The useful moment is the search for the missing partner, so give your child time to look.

3. Race to 50: keep the total moving

Start here: ages 7–9; adding small numbers to a running total.

Each player starts at zero. On your turn, roll two dice, add them, and add that sum to your score. Write down the new total. The first player to reach or pass 50 wins. You do not need an exact roll to finish.

For example, you have 27 and roll 4 and 5. That makes 9, so your new score is 36. Ask, “Would adding 10 and taking away 1 help?” If that is unfamiliar, count on together instead.

For an easier game, use one die and finish at 20. A small container with a lid keeps the dice from disappearing under a seat.

4. Closest to 100: two digits, one decision

Start here: ages 7–10; place value and subtraction.

Write three digits on paper, such as 2, 7 and 9. Choose two of the three digits and use each once to make a two-digit number as close to 100 as possible. Each player writes an answer. Compare answers, then work out the gap.

Here, 97 is 3 away from 100. The same digits in 79 are 21 away. Ask why putting the 9 in the tens place helped. Take turns choosing the next three digits and play five rounds.

Once that feels easy, change the target to 50. Now 72 is 22 away and 27 is 23 away; 29 is closer still, at 21 away. The biggest number is no longer automatically the best choice.

5. The Five-Coin Café: let your child set the menu

Start here: ages 6–9; addition and subtraction in a familiar setting.

Draw a menu with three items: toast costs 2 pretend coins, fruit costs 1, and juice costs 3. Give the customer a budget of 5. Your child takes the order, finds the total and returns any change.

Toast and fruit cost 3, leaving 2 coins. Toast and juice use the whole budget. Fruit and two juices cost 7, so the customer needs to change the order.

Let your child invent a new item or offer you an absurdly expensive sandwich. You can still discuss the price. Keep whole-number prices initially; add real currency amounts only when those are familiar.

6. Array Detective: find the multiplication

Start here: ages 8–12; equal groups and multiplication.

Draw 3 rows of 4 dots. Ask your child how many dots there are and how they know. Counting every dot is allowed. Then draw a line after the second row: 8 dots plus 4 dots makes 12.

On the next turn, your child draws an array and you solve it. For a harder puzzle, give only the total: “Draw two different arrays with 24 dots.” Four rows of six and three rows of eight both work.

A printable multiplication chart can help check an answer. Print it before you leave, since opening a web page still needs a connection.

What about an offline math app?

Sometimes a child wants to play independently, and an adult wants to finish a cup of coffee. Here are two options with different offline arrangements. This is a feature guide, not a hands-on comparison of every current app version.

Tiger Math: focused practice for ages 6–12

We make Tiger Math. Its learning activities and locally stored progress work offline, with no ads or child login. It includes arithmetic practice, hints and a parent report. The free tier allows up to 20 answered questions per child each day; the optional Lifetime purchase expands access. Your app store shows the local price.

Offline practice does not mean every app function works without a connection. Downloads, updates and purchases need internet access. Progress stays on the device rather than syncing through a child account. Our privacy policy explains optional, parent-controlled analytics and diagnostics.

Khan Academy Kids: a dedicated offline collection

Khan Academy Kids is a free, ad-free learning app for ages 2–8. It provides an offline section called Kodi’s Suitcase. Its official offline guide explains how to access that collection. Do not assume the full online library will be available when you disconnect; check the activities your child wants before travelling.

The five-minute check before you leave

  1. Install or update the app while connected. Finish any setup and download the activities you need.
  2. Turn on airplane mode and make sure Wi-Fi is also off.
  3. Close and reopen the app. Start a new activity, rather than checking only a screen that was already loaded.
  4. Complete a few questions, leave the activity, and check whether progress remains when you return.
  5. Pack a paper backup. A flat battery is a different problem from weak Wi-Fi.

Offline and ad-free are separate promises. Airplane mode tells you whether an activity needs a network connection. It does not establish what the app stores, how it behaves after reconnecting, or its advertising policy. Check those separately.

Do these games actually help children learn?

There is research behind some kinds of number play. Ramani and Siegler’s board-game study found improvements in several numerical skills among low-income preschoolers who played a particular linear number game. That is narrower than saying any game raises math attainment. The six activities here are practical suggestions, not the intervention tested in that study.

While you play, listen for what changes: your child finds 7 + 3 without counting every card, explains why 97 is closer to 100, or recognises four equal rows. Those are more useful things to notice than how long they stayed busy.

Questions parents ask before a trip

What can we play with no phone and no equipment?

Mystery Number works entirely aloud. You can also take turns giving a starting number and asking for one more, one less, or ten more. Pick a range your child already understands.

How long should we play?

Try one game for five to ten minutes, then decide together whether to continue. That is a convenient travel plan, not a scientifically established minimum. It is fine to stop while the game is still enjoyable.

What if one child is much quicker than the other?

Use different number ranges or work toward a shared goal. One child might find pairs that make 10 while another finds pairs that make 20. Nobody needs to race a sibling to contribute.

For the next trip, pack a deck beside the charging cable. If the battery runs out, the next game is already in the bag.
